My last hill training before the Dick Lytie Half Marathon in two weeks is in the books, people. Woo Hoo! It was a good workout. The first hill was not easy. My legs were pretty sore from yesterday’s miles. And if you would have seen me try to get up that first hill with my limping, gimping, wincing and general hobbling you never would have thought I’d have finished the run. But I did and I for the most part felt pretty good. The last hill, which is probably the hardest actually felt the best. And I can thank Mr. Kanye West for my motivation for that hill. His song Stronger came on my Ipod as I was at the bottom of the hill, and I played it over and over again. The entire hill is probably between 1/2 mile to 3/4 of a mile and I replayed the beginning of the song over and over and over again until I got up that damn hill.
Work it, make it, do it,
Makes us harder, better, faster, stronger!
Work it harder, make it better,
do it faster, makes us stronger,
more than ever, never over,
Our work is never over.
Now that don’t kill me
Can only make me stronger
I need you to hurry up now
’cause I can’t wait much longer
The funny thing is that the song is in no way a song about overcoming obstacles. I’m pretty sure if you read the rest of his lyrics, it’s the same as all of his other songs…women. And himself. But yet I LOVE that song and it is so motivating. I guess I just focus on the lyrics that I like and tune out the rest. Plus, it’s got a good beat and it’s easy to dance to. (Man, I miss Dick Clark and American Bandstand – I hope you read that and put the appropriate sing song tune to the American Bandstand part like they did at the opening of every show. And was it just me, or did everyone want to grow up to dance on American Bandstand? Okay, maybe it was just me. I digress….)
This song got me to thinking about my Ipod list and how it has evolved over the years. Originally it contained ONLY fast paced and motivating tunes. Even if the song was a favorite of mine but was a bit slower melody or was something that wouldn’t push me, it didn’t make the cut. But I’ve come along way and I don’t rely on my music to keep me going as much as I once did. Don’t get me wrong, I do still rely on music 100%. But now it’s more a companion where in the beginning it was, in some part, the only thing that kept me moving forward. I was afraid to have a slow tempo song on my Ipod because I thought it would make me stop running, curl up under a tree and take a nap. Now, I can listen to pretty much any kind of song and use it as a nice distraction. I’m no longer making the music do all of the heavy lifting.
But with that said, I do have a few songs on my Ipod that are absolute motivators and are guaranteed to kick my butt whenever they come on. Unfortunately my Ipod is a shuffle so the songs play at random so I can’t just pull up the songs when I most need them. But that’s okay too. This way, whenever they come on, it’s more of a treat. Like at the bottom of the hill, when Kanye’s Stronger started playing. It was a sign that I was going to kick that hill’s ass. Here are some of my other songs that will get me up any hill and are sure to get replayed for at least a mile before I go back to the regular and random rotation of my songs.
- Kanye West: Stronger
- Christina Aguilera: Fighter
- Eminem: Lose Yourself
- Storm Large: Ladylike
- Johnny Cash: Get Rhythm
- Paul McCartney: Let it Be
I’m guessing most of you are familiar with most of these songs. But if there’s one you haven’t heard of, I’m guessing it’s #4. This song SCREAMS girl power! You have to check it out. Here’s a link to the video on YouTube. http://youtu.be/oz02IIF20dE
Sorry about the link. I was trying to embed the MP4 song and then I also tried to embed the video right into my post. But apparently my blog doesn’t qualify for that fancy stuff. I’d have to pay for an upgrade. And no offense to my 2 faithful readers, but you just don’t warrant an upgrade at this time. Maybe when it gets a bit cheaper and when I get 3 or dare I say it… 4 readers, I’ll spring for the upgrade. But in the meantime you’ll have to check out the video by actually going to YouTube and watching it there. I know, I know, how low-tech of me. But consider it going “old school”.
Let me know what you think of the song. And let me know what you think of my other 6 must-haves. I suggest the first 4 for anyone who needs an extra push. The last two, are personal and probably only help me climb that hill, but ya never know. What are your go-to tunes?
Until next time… gotta run.
